Last night I was priviliaged to speak on behalf of Meningitis Now at the Little Big Hero Charity Ball in memory of Baby Joél, who tragically passed away of meningitis on December 31st 2009. It was a strange thing to be talking about a child who had had meningitis around the same time as year as me; despite our circumstances being considerably different I felt a real connection to everyone in the room and it was fantastic to meet so many passionate fundraisers. I was so inspired by Kim, Joél's mum, and Anna, his godmum. They've done some amazing fundraising over the years from balls to marathons and skydives (not sure I'm brave enough for the last one!). I came aware with some great tips for the marathon, so thank you Anna!
One thing I was asked to do in particular was to give an update on the Meningitis B vaccine. I am baffled that still we have not been given a final date as to when the vaccine will be put into the immunisation schedule. Time lost is lives lost and everybody I met felt the same. It was also great to talk to so many people who had signed the Beat It Now petition. I was lucky enough to attend the launch of this campaign in Bristol with Steve Dayman, our fantastic founder of the meningitis movement. Steve recently recieved his Pride of Britain award on the TV- truly deserved! He is an inspirational man and incredibly kind.
What made the ball even better of course was the fact that it was Great Gatsby themed! As a history nerd it was a perfect theme! Everyone was fantastic event and really well organised. I'll post final fundraising count when it's confirmed!

Vaccine update- approximately 700 cases of meningitis could have been prevented since the vaccine was licensed in January 2013!

Tuxedo napkins- amazing!

The inspirational Kim- what a joy to meet you.

The wonderful (and generous!) Petra and Martin.

Dinner time- all in a good cause!

Anna the organisational machine!
